Jason Alexander

Mark Rothko once said “There is no such thing as a good painting about nothing.”  In his latest series of figurative paintings and drawings under the title _Mourners Walk Over Maple Leaves_ Jason Alexander has said something.

More than most contemporary works of emotional outcry, which leave the viewer angrily aroused and often helpless, Alexander’s effort has an unusual cleansing effect. These life-size drawings/paintings evoke reflection on loss.  Standing in front of the work becomes a meditative process about the natural process of living and dying.  The paintings capture the space in-between, that time when the mourning process evolves into the healing process.  Through the strength of his artistic draftsmanship the viewer glimpses a moment in time frozen on a piece or paper or canvas.

There are no backgrounds, no settings and no props.  We are observing sadness and loss in the purest form.
